After many many years of controversy a development company has finally been granted planning permission to build a third supermarket in Coalisland. The location of the new store has always been a contentious one because it’s on the site of the head of the Coalisland Canal. Local campaigners for the development/conservation of the Canal have argued that the it was an important part of the towns heritage and should be developed as a tourist attraction. Clearly that battle has now been lost with the commencement of work. Time will tell if the new build will bring the regeneration of the town that has been promised by some.
